Because instruments are not perfect sometimes certain notes can tend to be a little too high or low in pitch without going far enough to actually change which note it is. The bassoon hasn't gone through a modernization like most other instruments of the band world, so this is especially true. This can sound very bad if not corrected, so at the bottom of every fingering page there is a message if the note is out of tune. Sharp means the night is too high, Flat means the note is too low. In most cases this can be corrected with the simple knowledge that the problem exists and either applying slightly more or less lip pressure to the reed for the specific note.
