Reading Music

Our First Song!

Now lets apply what we've learned. First we know this is in 4/4 time because of the C (Common time which is the same as 4/4). This means each measure gets 4 beats.

Just looking at the rhythmic values, in the first measure we have a half note worth 2 beats then a quarter note worth 1 beat followed by a quarter rest worth 1 beat of silence. The second measure has 4 quarters notes in a row, each worth 1 beat.

Now if we figure out the pitches we'd know the notes in order are; F, C, rest, F, G, A, B.

We've now read out first song! Once you get the Fingering section of this site you'll see how the pitches on the staff correspond to the instrument.
